Margarita Aguilar, the former director of the El Museo del Barrio, has filed a sex discrimination and hostile work environment complaint with the New York State Division of Human Rights.
Aguilar, who was fired earlier this month, claims that she was told by two of the museum’s board executive committee members to lose weight and to dress better. Aguilar also alleges that she and another museum employee were “acting like hysterical women.”
The museum board claims that it fired Aguilar because of her alleged ineffective leadership, dereliction of duty, and poor fund-raising.
